 Charles Thomson's Final design for the Great Seal of the United States, 1782; 

Historical Context
This Image was created at 1782, by Charles Thomson. The point of this image was to show to the world  that United States is a strong country and at the same time everyone is welcomed.The history of the Great Seal begins with the day of our founding as a nation. The Continental Congress appointed a committee to design a seal for the United States on July 4, 1776, it was the same day they adapt Declaration of Independence. It took Charles Thomson and Congress about 6 years to finish the final design.

The olive branches represent power of peace.
The thirteen stars were described as "breaking through a cloud."
 E pluribus unumIt refers to the Union formed by the separate states.
The red and white stripes represent the states of united under and the blue color represents the President and Congress.
Arrows represent war.

What it means to be an American?
To be an American you have to follow the laws, treat your fellow Americans with respect. Never judge people by their skin colors. In other hand you have to be loyal to this country and helping out in any way you can.
